Daily Mindfulness: Tea Meditation
Meditation helps us detach. It offers us the opportunity to reflect on our thoughts and refocus our mind on the present moment. Allocating as little as a few minutes per day to this practice is really important as it can help you decrease unnecessary stress, gain more control over your emotions, make better life decisions and help you slow down the pace you live your life.
After years of struggling to commit to this practice, we came across an article on the advantages of the practice of meditation through tea. That was it! The tea meditation starts with the moment you decide to make yourself a tea and you head towards your kettle. As heavy tea drinkers, we saw this as an opportunity to stop finding excuses to push back our daily mediation practice!
Drinking tea can be thought of as any of the everyday tasks and activities we do but by its nature, tea introduces calm and the idea of a ritual. From 10 minutes to 30, we are going to show you step by step how to enjoy the experience and you will see how this small thing can brighten up your day!
What you need:
Organise your day so you can spend a few minutes with a cup in a quiet place away from any distractions, with yourself fully present in the moment.
You can pick your favourite tea, or you can choose the one that will help to heal any tension you have or to relax. You can’t go wrong with the blend you will use as the practice is more focused on the experience rather than the specificity of the infusion you are sipping.
Our combo to make the most of this precious moment when we can: Our Simply Sleep herbal blend, a divine scented candle from Mandala Moods, a Selenite lamp from Mermaid&Bear for mood-lighting & few cleansing tools from Botanical H2o!
How it works:
1. Fill up your kettle and turn it on. Listen to the sound of the water bubbling and try to really place your focus on it.
- Prepare your favourite mug or teapot for brewing the tea.
- Placing the leaves carefully inside the teapot or the infuser, hearing the soft crackling sound they make as they are set down and pause.
- When the water is ready, pour it in and watch the slow colour transformation. Enjoy the moment of peacefulness and take a few deep breaths.
- Your tea is now ready, but there is no reason to rush. Enjoy the smell for a few seconds and try to notice any flickers of past or future thoughts, calmly setting them aside.
- Pause and touch gratitude. Give thanks to the tea in front of you for giving you this moment of peace. Be grateful to the universe for making this mindful moment happen.
- Meditate. Sit. With every sip you take, allow yourself to get back to your inner place of calm. Learn to just accept and ‘not do’. Not doing is extremely challenging work, but it is SO worth it!
- Ease your way out of your bubble and slowly get back to your day.
It’s your time, your body and your mind. Have the courage take control of them, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Make space in your life for a cup of tea. There are a lot of benefits from tea meditation practice and they focus on reducing anxiety and stress. A session might last 10 minutes with one cup, an hour or an entire morning with several cups; just depending on what’s best for you today!
